Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
