US Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Concerns of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

The latest American bombardment in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed unease regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Members of the former president's political movement have allegedly focused on the vast landmass following the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Only a short time following the start of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House adviser, shared a suggestive image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the American flag, accompanied by cryptic caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich land, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending recently, earmarking a large sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we demand full respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were further complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a volunteer role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative commended the administration's actions, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since assuming office, the US president has consistently alarmed European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the most northerly US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a notable television interview, the leader refused to exclude the use of armed action to gain control of Greenland. This position comes during intensifying global competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Opposition

In response to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a joint and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a nuanced picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's residents desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant appetite to join the United States. The island has had the option to seek independence for many years.

Expert View: A Plausible Threat?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director focusing in defence conceded she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
